(N5-N3) The Executive Guide to Taking the Shinkansen - NIHONGO CANDY (Ep. 135)

🚄 THE EXECUTIVE GUIDE TO TAKING THE SHINKANSEN

Traveling in Japan? The Shinkansen is efficient, but the system can be tricky. Here is your quick guide from NIHONGO CANDY Episode #135.

1️⃣ BOOKING: GO DIGITAL
For business travelers, we recommend booking online via "SmartEX" or "JR-EAST Train Reservation".
• Pros: English interface, easy changes, and IC card (Suica) linking.
• At the Station: If you go to the counter, ask: "Kyoto made, shiteiseki o onegaishimasu." (Reserved seat to Kyoto, please).

2️⃣ SEAT SELECTION
• Green Car (Green-sha): Business Class equivalent. Quiet, spacious, all reserved.
• Ordinary Car: We recommend booking "Reserved" (Shiteiseki) for peace of mind.

3️⃣ ESSENTIAL ETIQUETTE
To travel like a sophisticated local:
🔹 Luggage: Large suitcases require an "Oversized Baggage Space" reservation in advance.
🔹 Reclining: Polite to ask first. "Sumimasen, taoshimasu." (Excuse me, I'm reclining).
🔹 Calls: Take phone calls on the deck (between cars).
🔹 Food: No onboard carts on many routes. Buy food at the station.

4️⃣ QUICK PHRASE SHEET (Save this! 👇)
🗣️ Window seat:
"Madogawa o onegaishimasu."

🗣️ One-way / Round-trip:
"Katamichi de" / "Ofuku de"

🗣️ Luggage space:
"Nimotsu space no yoyaku o onegaishimasu."
